Royal Doulton Rupert BearRupert Bear is a children’s comic strip character created by the English artist Mary Tourtel and first appearing in the Daily Express newspaper on 8th November1920.
In 1935 Alfred Bestall, who had been an illustrator at Punch, took over as artist and storyteller.  Bestall proved to be very successful in the field of children’s literature and worked on the Rupert stories and artwork well into his 90s.  The series is continued today by other artists and writers.
The comic strip was, and still is, published daily in the Daily Express with many of these stories later being printed in books.  Every year since 1936 a Rupert annual has also been released.  Rupert Bear has become a well-known character in the childrens culture in the United Kingdom.
Beswick produced their figurines from 1980 to 1986 and Royal Doulton produced their figurines from 1998 to 2000.
